When sourcing caps and overcaps for cosmetic packaging, buyers often hear a common rule of thumb: use PS for solid-color caps and MS for transparent caps.

This recommendation reflects common material choices in the packaging industry, but it is not a universal rule.

Polystyrene (PS) can be transparent, and MS resin can also be produced in solid colors. The more important question is which material offers the right balance of appearance, mechanical performance, moldability, assembly compatibility, and cost for a specific cap design.

In this guide, we explain the differences between PS and MS, why they are often selected for different cosmetic packaging applications, and what manufacturers should evaluate before confirming a material.

When developing printed cosmetic packaging, customers often hear comments from manufacturers such as:

“We need to set up the printing registration again.”

“The artwork position has changed, so a new registration is required.”

“Even with the same bottle, changing the printing orientation may require a new setup.”

This can raise a few questions. What exactly is printing registration? Does it mean adding a mark to the bottle? Will it affect the final appearance?

In most cases, printing registration is about establishing the correct reference position for printing artwork on a container. It is not necessarily an additional mark printed on the bottle.

For cosmetic packaging, accurate registration helps ensure that logos, text, and graphics appear in the intended position and remain consistent throughout mass production.

When selecting plastic bottles for skincare, makeup, and personal care products, one of the first questions buyers ask is: What decoration options are available?

Plastic cosmetic packaging can be customized in many ways, from molded-in colors and spray coatings to screen printing, hot stamping, electroplating, and labeling. Each technique creates a different visual effect and comes with its own material requirements, production considerations, and cost implications.

However, not every decoration method is suitable for every bottle. PET, PETG, PP, PE, and ABS differ in their optical properties, surface characteristics, heat resistance, and manufacturing processes. The final result also depends on the bottle shape, decoration area, production volume, and quality requirements.

Choosing the right plastic bottle decoration technique means balancing visual appeal, material compatibility, production cost, and long-term consistency.
